Her music is different, a heady mix of rock, funk, pop, and R & B. In the tradition of black female rock' n' soul artists like Tina Turner, Joyce Kennedy of Mother's Finest and Nona Hendryx, she's a strong, free spirit - self-assured and confident without being cocky or arrogant. The challenge that was presented to me was to assist in helping to shape the image of Esperanza and to create press images and stills, along with a CD jacket for her first commercial work, "They Don't Understand Me". In a way, this was to showcase her style and uniqueness in the same way as her music: Tough, yet sometimes tender; hard, yet sometimes soothing; at times wild and surreal, and then, sensitive and melodic. Regardless of attempts at categorization, this showcase was designed to keep it honest and real, not gimmicky. |
